The Best Time to Start Vaccinations

When puppies are born, they receive vital antibodies from their mother's milk (colostrum). However, this natural passive immunity is temporary and begins to fade rapidly within the first few weeks of life.

The optimal window to begin your puppy's vaccination schedule is between 6 to 8 weeks of age. Starting during this critical timeframe ensures that as maternal antibodies decline, the vaccines step in to "teach" the puppy's immune system how to defend itself.

After the initial dose, puppies require a series of booster shots every 2–4 weeks until they are about 16 weeks old to build full, long-lasting immunity.

Standard Puppy Vaccination Schedule in India

Puppy Age Recommended Vaccine Diseases Protected Against
6 – 8 Weeks Puppy DP or DHPPiL (1st Dose) Canine Distemper, Parvovirus, Infectious Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Leptospirosis
9 – 10 Weeks DHPPiL / 7-in-1 or 9-in-1 (Booster 1) Core diseases plus broader Leptospirosis strains and Adenovirus
12 – 14 Weeks DHPPiL (Booster 2) + Anti-Rabies (1st Dose) Final core booster for full immunity; initial Rabies protection (legally required in India)
14 – 16 Weeks Lifestyle Vaccines (Optional) Bordetella (Kennel Cough), Canine Coronavirus — based on lifestyle & vet advice
Annually Adult Boosters (Combo + Rabies) Maintains lifelong immunity against all core canine diseases

The Risks of Improper or Skipped Vaccination

Leaving your puppy unvaccinated or stopping the booster series halfway can have devastating consequences.

Parvovirus & Distemper

Both are highly contagious, resilient in the environment, and carry a very high mortality rate in unvaccinated puppies. Treatment is intensive and not guaranteed to succeed.

Rabies

100% fatal once symptoms appear. Failing to vaccinate against rabies is illegal in India and poses a severe public health hazard to your entire family.

Incomplete Immunity

If boosters are missed, the immune system forgets the initial vaccine "lesson" — leaving the dog with partial or zero protection, rendering the first shot practically useless.

Lifestyle Restrictions

Without an up-to-date vaccination record, your dog will be denied entry to boarding facilities, grooming salons, dog parks, and public transport — including trains and flights.

Frequently Asked Questions

The optimal window is 6–8 weeks of age, when maternal antibodies begin to fade. Starting at this critical point allows vaccines to establish immunity before the puppy is fully exposed to the environment.
The core mandatory vaccines are DHPPiL (covering Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, Leptospirosis) and the Anti-Rabies vaccine. Rabies vaccination is legally required under Indian law.
DHPPiL is a combination vaccine: D = Distemper, H = Hepatitis, P = Parvovirus, Pi = Parainfluenza, L = Leptospirosis. It is given as a series starting at 6–8 weeks and repeated every 2–4 weeks until 16 weeks of age.
Missing a booster means the immune system does not receive the repeated "training" needed to build lasting immunity. The initial shot alone is insufficient — the puppy remains vulnerable. If a booster is missed, consult your vet about restarting the series.
After completing the puppy series, adult dogs typically require annual booster shots for the core DHPPiL combination and the Rabies vaccine. Your vet may recommend tri-annual core boosters depending on the dog's lifestyle and local disease prevalence.
It is strongly advised to avoid public dog areas, dog parks, and contact with unknown dogs until at least 7–10 days after the final puppy booster (around 14–16 weeks). Controlled exposure in clean private spaces is generally safe after the first two doses.
Mild side effects — slight lethargy, reduced appetite, or low-grade fever for 12–24 hours after vaccination — are normal and temporary. Severe reactions (facial swelling, vomiting, difficulty breathing) are rare. If severe reactions occur, contact your vet immediately.
